Final Project

The street has been divided into six parts accroding to the main crossing traffic lights. Each Ads has been numbered in that area.

The numbering is like communicating the site, which is the Queen Street, with the photos that beside the map. The purpose of this mapping project is to let people experiencing street by both visualizing and memorising. Memorising here doesn’t mean to remember things, it is to evoke the memories of that particular place, the place you may been there before and you may never notice there was this Ads there all the time.

observations

By tidy up all the photos i have taken, there are some interesting result showing up:

Firstly, i realized there are large amount of ADS appearing on the bus-stops. I did a rough calculation about the percentage of each kind of ads. The percentage of Ads appears on the bus-stops turns up to approximately 45%. That is really high.

The number of buses on Queen St is corresponding to the bus-stops. Thus i would not be amazed how many Ads on the buses. But I noticed that there were many buses travelling on the street without any Ads on them, maybe because they are new? It could be the reason.

Secondly were the flags. I think I have never truly got attention to those flags before. After this mapping experiment I noticed there are so many. Approximately 40% on this city main street. The funny thing is: some of them already expired, like the “The Phantom of the Opera”. They are still there, flying in the wind.

I also surprised by the small amount of billboards appear on the street. I thought there should be more. But think clearly, it is such a dense area. The view of people on the street is very much restricted, there are too many high rise building built very close to each other, it is unreasonable to put many billboards on the building if they are can’t be seeing from the street.

last was the people hand-out flies:

mapping on Queen St

Yesterday, i want on Queen St, and started taking photoes for this mapping project. as i described in the previous post before, i only took the advertating that appear in the public areas, not include the ones on the windows of each shop, because those areas are still owned by the shop owners.

I started from the bottom of Queen St, and want all the way to the top of Upper Queen St. took all the photos i can see from each different side and view on the street.

concept for the mapping project

After all the busy work done for Design and the PM test, i finally can sit down and planning for my mapping project.

Advertising is a form of communication that typically attempts to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume more of a particular brand of product or service. There are many kinds of ads around everywhere in people's daily life, they are seen on the seats of shopping cart, on the walls of public parks and airport walkways, on the sides of buses and bus-stops, and are heard in telephone hold messages and most common in tv. ads are often placed anywhere people can easily or frequently access visual, audio and printed information.

The concept for this project is to mapping out different advertisings on Queen St in the central city area. The ads that i focus on are the visual ones that appear in the public spaces.

categories for the mapping ads:

  • Billboards
  • bus-stop ads
  • banners across street
  • flies
  • ads on the bus
